Teacher Professional Development Program

Gain the knowledge and confidence to integrate climate science into your classroom, no matter what subject or grade level you teach! Our Building Climate Literacy in All Students teacher professional development program will help you:

  • Understand the causes and mechanisms of climate change.
  • Engage students in hands-on, place-based environmental education.
  • Learn effective and motivating ways to teach about climate change.
  • Connect activities to the standards as well as your curriculum.
  • Build environmental and climate literacy in your students.

Teachers/Pre-service Teachers who complete the program will receive:

  • $100 stipend (to be paid after successful completion of the program, including a pre- and post-evaluation)
  • Free registration for our Annual Summit 
  • 12 professional development hours (certificate of participation for professional learning units (PLUs) to be provided upon successful completion of the program)
  • Opportunity to network with and learn from other teachers in the program
  • Direct support from RIEEA’s Executive Director and the program facilitators.

  • An invitation to attend other events through the year for additional opportunities for professional development hours, networking with other teachers and environmental educators, and lots of fun!

To be eligible, you must:

  • Teach in a K-12 school in Rhode Island or be enrolled in a teacher preparation program in a Rhode Island college or university. Teachers/pre-service teachers of all disciplines (not just science!) are encouraged to apply!
  • Complete the short, online application (see below).
  • Commit to attending a two-day workshop in mid-August.
  • Commit to completing a pre-survey at the beginning of the program (July) and a post-survey at the end of the program (October).
  • Be comfortable being outside and moving your body for up to a half mile.
