The Rhode Island School Recycling Project (RISRP) is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to demonstrating the environmental benefits of reducing, reusing, and recycling in lunchrooms through project-based learning. Working with nearly 80 schools across the state, RISRP engages students in reducing landfill waste and understanding the environmental impacts of food waste. Their Get Food Smart RI program implements hands-on recycling and waste sorting stations in cafeterias, empowering thousands of student “rangers” to be leaders in creating change. To date, RISRP has successfully diverted 665 tons of food for composting and recovered over 60 tons of healthy, edible food for redistribution through free “Share Fridges.” You can learn more about our work on our website at https://rischoolrecyclingproject.org and view the results schools are achieving on our dashboard at https://rirecyclingclub.org/dashboard/.
