Rhode Island Environmental
Education Association

Meet new RIEEA board member Madison Hindle! She first got involved with RIEEA after the 2020 RIEEA Annual Summit.

Madison is the Education and Outreach Manager for Rhode Island Resource Recovery, which manages the state’s Central Landfill and Materials Recycling Facility.

Madison is responsible for developing statewide programs on waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting and proper disposal which are provided at no cost to RI schools, community groups and organizations. One such program she worked on is RI’s new waste sorting game titled “Ready, Set, Sort!” which is a fun and interactive way for residents of all ages to learn how to dispose of their waste properly.

What’s your favorite outdoor place in Rhode Island, and why?

The top of the Central Landfill! As a trash nerd, I love learning all there is to know about how our sanitary landfill is engineered and operated to manage our waste while protecting the surrounding environment. It is not the highest point in RI, but it has a beautiful view – on a clear day you can see all the way to the Newport Bridge. To see for yourself, schedule a free tour on Resource Recovery’s website.

My second favorite place is South Shore Beach in Little Compton. Can’t beat Rhode Island beaches!

What’s your favorite environmental fact to share?

The average American throws out 4.9 pounds of trash per person every day. Let’s Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle to decrease that number!

What are you most looking forward to in working with RIEEA?

As a new board member, I am looking forward to meeting and learning from other educators in the field.
