A Hybrid Professional Development Workshop on Environmental Action Civics
Whether or not you joined us in the spring, this workshop is for you! Together we’ll explore how you can use Environmental Action Civics (EAC) to empower young people to identify local environmental issues, investigate root causes, and take meaningful action in their communities.
Two-Part Professional Development Series
- Online Course (Sept 2–Oct 19, 2-3 hours at your own pace): Build foundational knowledge and complete a SOAR analysis of your practice.
- In-Person Gathering (Oct 29, 5:30–7:00 PM): Join us at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Powder Mill Ledges in Smithfield. Optional pre-workshop hike at 4:30 PM!
At the in-person gathering, we’ll share insights from the online course, connect with colleagues across formal and informal education, and brainstorm new ways to bring student-led environmental action into classrooms and communities. Expect opportunities for networking, collaboration, and hands-on reflection—plus dinner and materials provided. All attendees will receive a $25 participation stipend at the event to cover travel and/or child/elder care costs.
Participants will leave with:
- Practical strategies to integrate student-led action into curricula and programs
- A supportive community of practice for ongoing collaboration
- Inspiration from peers and local partners working on place-based projects
Join us to connect, share ideas, and help grow a statewide movement for Environmental Action Civics in Rhode Island!

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Sarah Jennings (SJ) (she/they) has been with Earth Force for three years as a program manager, working directly with school districts and educators. She is grant funded to work in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed primarily on three projects: 1) integrating Environmental Literacy in DCPS curriculum with a NOAA BWET project; 2) coordinating a student-written and led environmental action grant competition called Caring for Our Watersheds; and 3) collaborating closely on training and implementing Environmental Action Civics to partners in that region. SJ stays outside of PVD (relocated recently from PA) in a tiny cabin camper with her dog and is a part of the biking community. She was a K-12 teacher for the past 10 years in DC before working with the Buzzards Bay Coalition and then Earth Force most recently! She also does her own Environmental Literacy consulting with Halcyon Education, LLC.
