Join us in celebrating James Tzul Pastor (they/them) of Cumberland, RI, as our 2025 Student/Youth of the Year! The RIEEA Environmental Education Awards recognizes those who exemplify dedication and commitment to outdoor learning and recreation.
James has established themselves as a dedicated environmental educator and community leader. Starting as a high school student with Groundwork RI’s Green Team, James has grown into a thoughtful leader and educator, committed to environmental justice and community care. In 2024, they coordinated a youth-driven composting initiative at a low income housing community in Pawtucket, which engaged residents to divert over 1,000 pounds of food waste in just five months. This year, James stepped into a leadership role as Program Coordinator for the “Green Change Makers” program, co-run by Groundwork RI and Southside Community Land Trust, teaching teens about gardening, composting, native species, and green infrastructure. From organizing community garden events and leading stewardship of public green spaces, to presenting environmental issues to families and city officials, James is making lasting change in our state.
Join RIEEA as we recognize and celebrate the awardees at a ceremony on Thursday, October 9, 6:00-8:00pm, at the Save The Bay Center in Providence. There will be lite fare served by a local caterer; open bar with local wine, beer, and soft drinks; live music; and a short program in which the winners will accept their awards.
***Tickets are on a sliding scale to ensure everyone can access the event.
