In 2007, Congressman John Sarbanes of Maryland and Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island introduced legislation that strengthens and expands environmental education in America's classrooms and reconnects children with nature. More recently, this legislation is serving as a platform for creating environmental literacy plans in states around the nation, with RI being one of the forerunners of this initiative.

The bills, each titled the No Child Left Inside (NCLI) Act of 2007, were introduced in the House (H.R.3036) and the Senate (S.1981), and have bipartisan support. To read a case for support of RI's environmental literacy plan, click here.

The No Child Left Inside Coalition www.NCLICoalition.org was organized to support passage of NCLI. RIEEA and many of the member organizations are Coalition members.

The Coalition works to ensure that legislators know schools must be given more encouragement and flexibility to develop and deliver EE programs and that the federal government must increase EE funding. Find out what you can do today!
